Amid the ravaging floods in parts of northern Nigeria, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) on Monday has forecast three days of nationwide thunderstorms, with parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Borno states expected to be hit first.
In a weather outlook released on Monday, NiMET projected thunderstorms later in the day for several northern states, including Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto.
Morning thunderstorms are also predicted over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, and Kwara states. The afternoon and evening periods could see isolated thunderstorms across Kwara, FCT, Niger, Benue, and Kogi states.
In the southern region, rainfall is expected over parts of Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ogun, extending to the coastal states of Lagos, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa during the morning.
Later in the day, thunderstorms are likely to affect Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Ondo, Abia, Osun, Imo, Ekiti, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, and Lagos states.
NiMET advised residents in these regions to stay informed and take precautions, especially in flood-prone areas. “There is a high risk of urban flooding in major cities due to heavy rainfall,” the agency warned, urging the public to adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.
Additionally, NiMET advised residents and airline operators to check www.nimet.gov.ng for forecast updates and plan their schedules accordingly.
The Federal Government also appealed to Nigerians to clear drainages and canals to reduce the risk of flooding.
A report from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) highlighted rising water levels in key areas along the River Benue, indicating a growing flood risk. The agency urged flood-prone states to implement necessary measures to mitigate potential flooding.
