Daniel Dubois solidified his status as the world heavyweight IBF champion with a fifth-round knockout of Nigerian-born Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium, London, England🏴, on Saturday, September 21, in front of 96,000 fans.
Dubois, 27, floored Joshua in the first and third rounds before ending the fight 59 seconds into the fifth with a counterright that sent Joshua to the canvas from which he never recovered.
Dubois, who gained the IBF belt vacated by Oleksandr Usyk three months ago, roared to the crowd, “Are you not entertained?” after the fight.
For some reason, there was a mix-up: he entered the ring first even though he was the defending champion, but he still left as the undisputed International Boxing Federation champ, and undoubtedly the next big sensation on the heavy-weight boxing stage.
Joshua, whose best days seem now behind him, was outclassed. This defeat marks Joshua’s fourth in five years, although his promoter, Eddie Hearn, says he’s not quitting and suggested Joshua wants a rematch with Dubois.
But AJ’s performance last night, marked by three knockdowns and a ragged defense, indicates his days as a top contender might be over.
Dubois, now 22-2 with 21 KOs, expressed his determination to reach his full potential and hinted at a future fight with the winner of the December 21 rematch between Usyk and Tyson Fury. He also mentioned wanting another shot at Usyk, to whom he lost last year.
“I’m a gladiator. I’m a warrior to the bitter end,” Dubois declared, aiming for the top level of boxing.
