A last-minute coalition of ten political parties has emerged ahead of the Edo State gubernatorial election set for Saturday, September 21. At least nine opposition parties have agreed to align their voting structures in support of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
The race is largely seen as a contest between Senator Okpebholo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Mr. Asue Ighodalo, and the Labour Party candidate, Mr. Olumide Akpata.
This coalition is expected to boost the APC’s chances, although the electoral strength of these nine minority parties remains uncertain.
Sam Arase, the Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), made the merger announcement on behalf of the Assembly of Registered Political Parties in Edo State. According to Arase, the coalition prefers the APC candidate and is confident of his victory.
The participating parties include the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Action Democratic Party (ADP), All Peoples Party (APP), Accord (A), Young Progressive Party (YPP), Action Alliance (AA), and the National Rescue Movement (NRM).
The coalition has called for a peaceful election and urged Edo citizens to vote for the APC to elect Senator Monday Okpebholo as the next governor of Edo State.
The winner of Saturday’s election will succeed outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki of the PDP, who faces stiff opposition from powerful political forces in the state led by former APC leader Adams Oshiomhole determined to prevent Obaseki’s preferred successor.
