A suspect in a possible assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump has been identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh. The incident occurred at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Routh allegedly pointed an AK-47 at the former president while he was playing golf.
Routh, a registered Democrat, has a history of donating to Democratic candidates through the political action committee ActBlue. He contributed over $140 between 2019 and 2020 to presidential candidates like Andrew Yang, Tom Steyer, and Senator Elizabeth Warren.
His social media activity was filled with anti-Trump rhetoric, and he expressed disappointment with Trump’s presidency despite voting for him in 2016. “We all were greatly disappointed, and it seems you are getting worse and devolving; are you retarded,” Routh wrote in his social media around 2020. “I will be glad when you are gone“.
Routh also has a criminal history. He was arrested and convicted in 2002 for having “weapons of mass destruction” after a standoff with police in North Carolina. His son stated that Routh harbors an intense dislike for Trump.
Trump Vows Not To Surrender
Trump, who survived a separate assassination attempt in July, assured his supporters: “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I am safe and well
“Nothing will slow me down. I will never surrender.”
Federal authorities confirmed that the recent incident was a failed assassination attempt.
Routh remains in custody as investigations continue into the motive and further details of the plot.
