In a bid to address the escalating food scarcity and hunger in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has allocated 1,200 bags of rice to each of his ministers.
Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, stated that these rice allocations are intended as palliatives for vulnerable members of society, with a particular focus on the elderly.
Dr. Alake disclosed that the Presidency provided the rice for distribution, emphasizing that the support will be directed exclusively towards the aged in his state. This announcement was made through a statement issued by Segun Tomori, Dr. Alake’s Special Assistant on Media, in Ado Ekiti on Sunday.
“Following the decision of the Presidency to respond to the yearnings of the Nigerian people to make more food available at the grassroots, 1,200 bags were made available to each minister to further supplement the established channels of distribution such as state governments and civic organizations,” Dr. Alake said.
He highlighted the importance of prioritizing the elderly, stating, “We need to reach out to our aged fathers and mothers at times like this to demonstrate the values of taking care of the old in the community.”
“In the spirit of inclusion, it is important that we channel this intervention mainly to elderly citizens who do not have the strength to compete for welfare goods at the established centers. We have taken their inventory and are delivering to them,” he added.
Dr. Alake also mentioned that subsequent interventions would target other vulnerable segments of the population, including widows, orphans, persons living with disabilities, and students in higher institutions of learning.
