Harris vs. Trump: Key 2024 US Presidential Debate Set to Shape Tight Race

U.S. Vice President and Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris will Tuesday night square off with former President Donald Trump in their first of three scheduled debates. It is expected to be a crucial moment in the 2024 US presidential election with the race intensifying and the candidates tied in the opinion polls.

Kamala Harris, the 59-year-old, only recently replaced President Joe Biden, whose alleged cognitive decline worried his party men and forced him to step aside. Mrs. Harris is a newcomer therefore at the presidential level and Tuesday’s debate provides her a critical opportunity to connect with voters who are still unfamiliar with her.

A recent New York Times/Siena poll revealed that voters are seeking more clarity on Harris’s policy positions, indicating that the debate could be a game-changer for her, and an opportunity to solidify her position and appeal to undecided voters as her initial period of political honeymoon begins to wane.

However, her background as a former prosecutor, and sharp, incisive debating skills honed in U.S. court for years, should count for something.

Donald Trump, the 78-year-old Republican former president, and an experienced debater, stirred down the likes of Hillary Clinton in 2016, and his devastating performance against Joe Biden is partly responsible for Biden’s stepping down from the race. However, he faces a different set of challenges, such as his combative style and potential use of combative tactics and controversial statements.

The debate’s format, which includes muted microphones for candidates not currently speaking, could influence the dynamics of their interaction.

The U.S. election is billed for November 2024, and the winner will not take office until inauguration on January 20, 2025.

Venue And Time Of Debate

The debate begins at 21:00 EDT on Tuesday 10 September or 02:00AM Nigeria Time, Wednesday morning.

It takes place live on the US network ABC from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The event will last 90 minutes with two commercial breaks, and there will be no audience in the room.

The Debate Rules?

The moderators will mute the mics when either candidate is not speaking, ensuring no interruptions.

Trump will have the last word. Ms. Harris will appear on the right side of viewers’ screens. No topics or questions will be shared in advance, and props or pre-written notes will not be allowed on stage.

Both candidates will have a pen, notepad, and water bottle, and cannot interact with campaign staff during commercial breaks.
