Nigeria🇳🇬 will host Benin Republic🇧🇯 in a West African derby on Saturday, September 7, in their ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series⚽🏆. The match will be the second between the two sides in four months, with the visitors getting a surprising victory over the Super Eagles in the first encounter in Cotonou in June.
Nigeria will be seeking revenge and dominance after losing to its tiny neighbor for only the second time in history.
Augustine Eguavoen, the interim coach appointed after the deal with German Bruno Labbadia fell through, will lead the team for the game on Saturday at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
However, Eguavoen said the focus of his team is winning and not revenging Benin for the previous loss.“Starting with the match against the Benin Republic on Saturday, nobody is mentioning anything about revenge,” Eguavoen maintained.
“Our goal is three points, and then we aim for another three points in Kigali on Tuesday that will put us in good stead for qualification.”

Newly brought-in Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has returned and joined the team in Uyo for training yesterday.
Former Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr, who now coaches Benin, will aim to take The Cheetahs to the first AFCON since 2019. The team has won three of 12 matches under the German, drawn four, and lost five times since he took over the head coach role in February 2023.
