Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark Makes History: Wins Gold for Nigeria at Paris 2024

Nigeria’s🇳🇬 Onyinyechi Mark made history on Friday September 6 at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games by breaking the Paralympic record in the Women’s 61Kg Powerlifting🏋 category with a monumental lift of 150kg. 

The 23-year-old claimed gold on Friday, outlifting China’s🇨🇳 Cui Jianjin, who secured silver with a 140kg lift, and Mexico’s🇲🇽 Amelia Perez, who took bronze with 130kg. 

Onyinyechi’s performance surpassed the previous record held by fellow Nigerian Lucy Ejike, cementing her dominance in the sport and giving Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Games.

With one lift remaining, Onyinyechi attempted to extend her record to 147kg, further solidifying her place as a powerhouse in powerlifting. 

Team Nigeria has consistently excelled in Paralympic powerlifting, securing ten medals, including four golds, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. 

Paralympians like Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo have established Nigeria as a global leader in the sport.
