The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued an urgent threat to occupy major cities across the country on September 15 if the recent increase in fuel prices is not reversed.
Senate President of the student union, Henry Okuomo, stressed the need for swift action to alleviate the severe hardships faced by millions of Nigerians due to the government’s economic policies.
The pump price for Nigeria’s most used energy source for automobiles and power generators was recently raised from N568 per liter to N897, sparking outrage across the polity. In some cities, products are going for as high as N1,200, and due to scarcity, they can be sourced up to N1,300 on the black market.
The NANS, with its over 40 million Nigerian student membership, is an important pressure group the government has endeavored to keep under control.
“We have determined that on the 15th of this month, there is no going back. We are hitting the street hard. We are going to demand not only a reduction in fuel price but also other things that are affecting the nation in general.“
Mr. Okuomo insisted, “We are going to do it. We will hit the streets if the government does not reverse most hardship policies before then.”
The student’s senate president claimed that on many of their campuses, the fuel hike and the queue at the filling station have paralyzed life. “Nothing is working in the country at the moment, and we can’t take it,” he said.
