Senator Nnenadi Usman, a former Finance Minister in the government of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has been elected head of the Labour Party‘s (LP) 29-member interim National Caretaker Committee.
Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the immediate-past Senate Deputy Minority Leader from Abia Central, will serve as the Secretary.
This decision was taken on Wednesday, September 4, during the party’s Extended Stakeholders meeting, which was held in the Abia State Government House Banquet Hall in Umuahia, the state capital.
The committee has a life span of only 90 days, during which period it is to reconcile the party’s warring factions and organize a convention at which new leadership will emerge from the ward level to the national stage.
Mrs Usman was also once a senator from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). representing Kaduna South Senatorial District.
She later switched parties, joining the Labour Party in the lead up to the 2023 general election.
In her acceptance speech, she emphasized the need for the party to work together and promised to do her job diligently.
Meanwhile, the former party chairman, Julius Abure, who was elected in a controversial convention in March this year, stayed away from the meeting, even though he was expressly invited.
However, the party’s crème de la crème, including its last presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Datti Baba Ahmed, were present. Of course, the only LP governor, Alex Otti of Abia, Senator Victor Umeh, and the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Rhodes-Vivour, were also present, among others.
Prior to the meeting, Mr. Abure warned it would be illegal and declared that he was the only recognized authority to call a stakeholders’ meeting. The steps he and his national working committee will now take remain to be seen.
