The Nigerian opposition Peoples Democratic Party has directed one of its senior politicians, Chief Nyesom Wike, current Federal Capital Territory Minister, to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee to answer charges over alleged anti-party activities.
The directive was given by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, during an appearance on Channels Television’s morning show, Sunrise Daily, on Monday, September 2
The committee was recently established by the party’s National Working Committee and is headed by Chief Tom Ikimi, Nigeria’s one-time Minister of Foreign Affairs during Gen. Sani Abacha’s military rule.
Abdullahi said during the interview, “Three weeks ago, we put up two committees in place, one of reconciliation and one of discipline. Nyesom Wike is one of the persons to face the disciplinary committee, which elder statesman Chief Tom Ikimi heads.
“The disciplinary committee will look into issues of anti-party activities. We’ve been receiving petitions regarding anti-party activities or sabotaging the party throughout the primary, leading to where we are now. These petitions against Wike and other party members have been aggregated and sent to the committee.
“Some party members even felt that Wike shouldn’t have gotten to this level as a member of the PDP, and they have been writing to the leadership.”
Abdullahi stated that Wike’s statement about “putting fire in their states” – referring to other PDP governors, is wrong and unacceptable. He called on Wike to better manage his words as a holder of public office in trust.
Mr. Wike, a former governor of oil-rich Rivers State in the southern tip of Nigeria, is reputed to have been one of the enablers of President Bola Tinubu‘s electoral rise victory in 2023, although he belongs to the opposition party. For this, he may have been rewarded with an pomp ministerial post in charge of the nation’s capital.
Since then, suspicions have been rife that Wike is keen on using his political influence to undermine his party, the PDP, to give the president and the ruling APC party additional terms in office.
