Nigerian Police have declared wanted a British national, Andrew Wynne, accused of attempting to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu through the alleged sponsorship of the #EndBadgovernance protests. The police claim Wynne has fled the country “since the commencement of investigations” and is being pursued by a global manhunt at the instance of the Nigerian government.
The Nigerian Police Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyuwa Adejobi, said on Monday, September 2, that nine other suspects has been apprehended “following extensive intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security agencies.”
The police spokesman claimed the suspects “received substantial financial backing from foreign sources to destabilize the country.” It did not name the source, but the police identified one internal collaborator, Lucky Ehis Obiyan, who it claims is also at large.
“Preliminary findings suggest they orchestrated and funded violent protests, disseminated false information, and engaged in other unlawful activities to create anarchy and justify their illegal plot to overthrow the democratically-elected government” of President Bola Tinubu, the statement added.
Police said Wynne built a network of “sleeper cells,” rented a space at Labour House, Abuja, for an “Iva Valley Bookshop,” and established “STARS of Nations Schools” as a cover for his subversive activities.
The police statement may explain recent police obsession with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), who owns the Labour House, Abuja. Police have twice invited the Labour boss, Joe Ajaero, for questioning. He will report next to the police Force Intelligence Unit on September 5.
Massive anti-government EndBadGovernance protests, coined “Days of Rage,” erupted across Nigeria from August 1 to 10. Protesters took to the streets in several states to protest the high cost of living and press for other demands for better governance.
Police say the suspects engaged in clear violation of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2011 and other relevant laws.
