Nigerian Labour Congress Threaten Nationwide Strike if Ajaero Is Detained, Mobilize Workers To Police Hq

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has requested national officers and affiliate unions to accompany President Joe Ajaero to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) headquarters on Thursday.

Ajaero was invited to appear before the force intelligence response team on August 20 for questioning over alleged criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime, but union lawyers appealed for an extension until tomorrow, Thursday, August 28.

In a circular, NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, asked all affiliate unions, state councils, and national officers to mobilize their members to show solidarity with Ajaero.

Members are expected to assemble at the National Headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress by 8:00 AM on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to “accompany the President to the Police for the scheduled interaction.

Beyond that, in state capitals, the circular directed union members to “embark on a peaceful procession to their State Police Headquarters”, and hold a “prayer session” for their boss there. NLC urged workers to take a “united stand” against forces that are “intimidating our leadership and stifling the voice of Nigerian workers.”

It also warned, “If for any reason, the President is detained, all workers nationwide shall proceed on indefinite strike.

The Unions under the leadership of Joe Ajero had recently won a 100% minimum pay increase from a reluctant government that complained of low revenues.
