The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the immediate appointment of Bruno Labbadia, a German football tactician, as the new Super Eagles coach.
Labbadia’s appointment was disclosed Tuesday via a post from the NFF’s X handle, which used the hashtag #thenff, a tag commonly used by the NFF to mark their official announcements.
The statement read, “The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that it has reached an agreement with German tactician Bruno Labbadia to become the Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles.”
The NFF Executive Committee approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development sub-committee to appoint Mr Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles.
Labbadia becomes the 37th Head Coach of the Super Eagles after the resignation of former coach Finidi George. Like George, Labbadia is a former player-turned-coach.
With the appointment, Labbadia will lead the Super Eagles to execute the coming matches for the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Nigerian team has some exciting games coming up. They will play at home against the Benin Republic on September 7 at the Nest of Champions, Uyo, before traveling to Rwanda three days later for their next match in Kigali.
The Super Eagles camp will open on September 1st in Uyo, marking the beginning of a new era under Bruno Labbadia’s leadership.

Bruno Labbadia is a German football manager and former striker who won the DFB-Pokal in 1989-90 with 1. FC Kaiserslautern and the Bundesliga in 1993-94 with FC Bayern Munich. He was capped twice for the German team and last managed VfB Stuttgart. Labbadia was of Italian ancestry and was born in Lenola, a town in the Lazio region.
He played for several top Bundesliga clubs and had two caps for the German national football team. His most successful season was probably the 1998–99 season, where he scored 29 goals for Arminia Bielefeld. He also scored 21 goals for Darmstadt 98 in 1986–87, 15 goal campaigns in 1987–88, and 1994–95 with top-flight clubs Hamburger SV and 1. FC Köln. Labbadia's managerial career began with Darmstadt 98, then Greuther Fürth, Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburger SV, VfB Stuttgart, and Hamburger SV. He was dismissed in April 2010 and returned to Hamburger SV in April 2015.
Labbadia's career ended in 2015, with Hamburg finishing in 16th position. In 2018, Labbadia was hired by VfL Wolfsburg, Hertha BSC, Stuttgart, and Nigeria. He had a record of four wins, three draws, and six losses in 13 matches. He was sacked in 2021 and reappointed in 2024.
Labbadia was announced via X(formerly Witter) as Nigeria’s national team head coach on the 27th of August 2024
