The Supreme Court has upheld the election of Bayelsa State Senator Douye Diri. He contested under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
On Friday, the Supreme Court denied the petition submitted by Timipre Sylvia, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for governor.
The lead decision, rendered by Justice Garba Lawal, declared that Sylvia and the APC’s appeal was a flagrant misuse of the legal system and without merit.
The Supreme Court unanimously upheld the previous rulings of the Court of Appeal and the Election Petition Tribunal.
The verdict of the Bayelsa Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to sustain Diri’s reelection on November 11, 2023, was unanimously upheld by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on July 18, 2024.
In its ruling, a three-person panel of the appellate court dismissed an appeal Timipre Sylva and APC had filed, attempting to overturn the Tribunal’s ruling.
On May 27, 2024, the APC and its candidate filed a challenge against Governor Diri’s reelection, but the tribunal presided over by Justice Adekunle Adeleye denied it due to its lack of substance.
The tribunal determined that neither Sylva nor APC presented reliable evidence to support their claims regarding the gubernatorial election.
