The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) leadership has threatened it could direct workers to down tools throughout the federation if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is arrested or detained by the state security forces.
It made this declaration Tuesday morning following an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) called in the wake of a police invitation of the NLC President yesterday over allegations of financing terrorism and other alleged treasonable offenses.
The NEC stated during the meeting that Ajaero would accept the police’s invitation, but they also underlined the need for the union’s legal counsel to ask for more time so that Ajaero could be presented to the police.
Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, the NLC’s deputy president, has advised the country’s labor force to be ready for more directives if the police behave in a way that deviates from the union’s demands about Ajaero’s imprisonment.
He said, “As a committed labor center, we will honor the police invitation because we are not a faceless organization. We are working with our lawyer for an extension of time.
“If the President is arrested, all workers will down tools immediately. We should wait for further directives from our leadership.”
