Former and current Nigerian political leaders are convening in a momentous meeting of the National Council of State. President Bola Tinubu is presiding over the meeting, which is taking place at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja.

It is the first time the council is meeting since Mr. Tinubu’s presidency in May 2023.

Attending the meeting includes his immediate predecessors, Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan, along with past military Heads of State, Generals Gowon Yakubu and Abdulsalami Abubakar, both of who are joining virtually.

It remains uncertain if the only other living former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, is present at the meeting, but he was recently involved in mediation talks in Kenya.

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akpabio, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, are also present at the meeting.

Several state governors are in attendance, including Governors Saminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, and Alex Otti of Abia State.

Former Chief Justices Alfa Belgore and Mahmud Muhammed, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy and Minister of Works David Umahi, among others, are present.

The agenda of the meeting was not disclosed to news reporters, but it comes just days after a violent EndBadGovernance protest engulfed the country.

Run-away inflation and food shortages are still biting in the Giant of African natio of about 240 million people.

The National Council of States is a vital organ that advises the government on general national direction.

It will be recalled that on August 9, a group of eminent Nigerians called – The Patriots – proposed to the president a constituent assembly to rework the terms of coexistence among the federating units of Nigeria and fashion out a people’s constitution to replace the military-imposed 1999 constitution.
