At least 90 people were killed in an Israeli strike on a school in Gaza City housing displaced Palestinians in what has been described as a “horrific massacre” by Gaza’s civil defense agency.
Some local news outlets report the latest figure has climbed to as high as 125, in one of the war’s bloodiest scenes since conflict broke out between Hamas and Israel in November 2023.
Israel’s army claimed it had “precisely struck Hamas terrorists operating within a Hamas command and control center embedded in the Al-Taba’een school.” The strike comes two days after Gazan authorities said more than 18 people were killed in Israeli strikes on two other schools in Gaza City.
One Gaza resident was overheard screaming, “Enough! Have mercy on us, for God’s sake, the young children and women are dying in the streets. Enough!”
But Israel has vowed to destroy the Palestinian group, Hamas, in retaliation for its October 7 crossborder attack although international mediation have ratcheted up in recent times.
Israel has agreed to resume talks next week at the request of international mediators following intense diplomacy aimed at averting a region-wide conflagration.
