President Bola Tinubu made a second appeal on Wednesday, urging Nigerians to be patient with his administration after the sixth day of unrelenting #EndBadGovernance protests against his government policies.
The presidential office in Abuja released a short video of the president trying to reassure protesters that the country is on the brink of a new dawn.
The president had been heavily criticized for his unimaginative first address, which did nothing to temper the protests. The protests escalated in several parts of the country after Tinubu’s first address.
In the video released Wednesday, August 7, Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians due to the removal of the fuel subsidy. For the first time, Mr. Tinubu acknowledged an “avoidable lag” between the subsidy removal and the implementation of his “good and helpful plans,” which had exacerbated the nation’s difficulties.

“Fellow Nigerians, this period may be hard for us, and there’s no doubt it will be tough,” Tinubu said. “But I urge you all to look beyond the present temporary pains and aim at the larger picture. All our good and helpful plans are in the works. More importantly, I know that they will work. Sadly, there was an avoidable lag between subsidy removal and these plans coming fully online.“
The President said the measures his government has taken will lead to economic recovery, urging Nigerians to maintain faith in his administration. He emphasized his commitment to improving the country’s future, highlighting specific initiatives such as making education more affordable and providing loans to higher education students.
“I plead with you, please, have faith in our ability to deliver and our concern for your well-being. We will get out of this turbulence, and due to the measures we have taken, Nigeria will be better equipped and able to take advantage of the future that awaits her. For example, we shall fulfill our promise to make education more affordable and provide loans to higher education students who may need them. No Nigerian student will have to abandon higher education because of lack of money.“
President Tinubu concluded his address by promising to continue working diligently to realize this vision: “Our commitment is to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of our people. On principle, we shall never falter. I assure you, my fellow countrymen and women, that we are exiting the darkness to enter a new and glorious dawn. Now, I must get back to work to make this vision come true.“
