Ohanaeze Ndigbo has announced September 25 as the date for the burial of its erstwhile President General, late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu.
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization decided at its National Executive Council meeting, which was held in honor of the deceased leader at its National Headquarters in Enugu.
The organization opened a condolence register to commemorate his legacy, with Secretary General Okey Emuchay leading the executive committee members in signing the register.
Chief Emuchay expressed deep sorrow over Iwuanyanwu’s sudden passing, describing him as a “huge iroko,” a “rare human being with a large heart, a philanthropist, an engineer of repute, a sportsman, and a media man.”
The Secretary-General assured Igbos that “the ship of Ohanaeze is in safe hands. Nothing will happen to Ohanaeze. He had wonderful ideas and visions for the Igbo nation and Nigeria. Collectively, as NEC, we want to give assurance that we shall match on from where he stopped, continuing his work and inspiring hope for the future.”
All activities, including the 2024 Igbo Day Celebration, billed for September 29 in Imo State, have been shelved in respect and honor of the departed President General.
Chief Emuchay said condolences came in from around the world, including from the President Bola Tinubu, Olusegun Obasanjo, Emeka Anyaoku, governors of the South East, and partners in the Southern and Middle Belt Forum.
A central burial committee of Ohanaeze will be established soon to liaise with Iwuanyawu’s family.
