Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), say they have successfully unmasked the identities of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria’s organizers and sponsors.

The hashtag identifies a nationwide protest scheduled for 1-10th August that has been abuzz on Nigeria’s social media for weeks, with no clear, definable objectives or organizers.

The domestic intelligence agency nosing around to put its fingers on the faceless organizers said in a statement Thursday evening it has successfully infiltrated the group and uncovered that the motives for the protest are “sinister” to “cause chaos and extreme violence in the land.” It said the plan is to “smear the federal and sub-national governments; make them unpopular and pit them against the masses,” and ultimately cause “a regime change, especially at the Centre.”

It provided no names, nor did it indicate it made any arrests.

DSS then advised the political establishment to pull the rug off the feet of the plotters, saying, they do not think that “aggression should be the first line action in the instance, in handling the emerging scenario”. Instead it recommends that non-kinetic and conflict resolution strategies, including moral suasion, stakeholder engagement, and other multi-track diplomatic shuttles, to dissuade the planners from actualizing their undesirable objective” be adopted. However, addressing the protest organizers, DSS said it “wishes to warn all the protest groups to eschew any form of proposed rage, anarchy, and spoliation” and to “listen to the voice of reason, good conscience and patiently engage with the authorities, in the interest of peace.

Nonetheless, it promised it would not stand by and watch law and order deteriorate in the country but where necessary, “apply all legitimate methods” to maintain it.

The agency asked for the support of all people of “goodwill” to “shun any invitation to participate in orchestrated violence designed to cause disaffection in the country” and help maintain peace for the country’s prosperity.-END-
