U.S. President Joe Biden has decided not to seek re-election after his candidacy appeared to tear the Democratic party apart.
In a tweet from his official handle on Sunday, Biden announced that he would “stand down” from the 2024 race but promised to give a more elaborate explanation later.
In his tweet, the president said, “While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said.
Mr. Biden hinted last week that he would only consider not running for a second term if his doctors advised him not to. Shortly after that, he was reported to have contracted the COVID-19 flu and is currently self-isolating at his beach house in Delaware.
Following public calls from 37 Democratic and Independent lawmakers for the president to hand the baton to a different contender, he made his statement on Sunday afternoon. A number of prominent Democrats, such as Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama, urged Biden to withdraw in private.
Biden Endorse Kamala
The 81-year old President Biden has now nominated his vice president Kamala Harris to replace him.

In a follow-up tweet he said he is offering his “full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.“, adding “it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.“
Calls for Biden to resign started with members of his party after his appalling performance in the debate against Donald Trump on June 25.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris on Friad ran a call with 300 major donors to raise funds for the campaign.
With the endorsement from Biden, she is likely to be a consensus nominee for the Democratic Party without going into extensive primaries which could not only delay the campaign but tear the party even more apart.
Biden’s Granddaughter Praise His Decision
Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi, immediately fired up a tweet on X praising his grandfather for his decision to drop out.
“I’m nothing but proud today of my Pop, our President, Joe Biden, who has served our country with every bit of his soul and unmatched distinction,” she wrote. “Not only has he been—and will continue to be—the most effective president of our lifetime, but he has likely already cemented himself as the most effective and impactful public servant in our nation’s history.”
Mr. Biden had come under intense scrutiny since his dismal performance in the June 25 debate with contender Donald Trump of the Republican party. During the debate, Biden appeared to lose his line of thought several times, alarming die-hard Democrats bent on stopping Trump from getting back to the White House.
