The Nigerian Senate is proceeding to create an electoral body for local government elections in response to the financial autonomy now reinforced by the July 11, judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The body will be known as the Local Government Independent Electoral Commission. It will conduct and oversee the process of electing local government officials nationwide.
A bill to this effect was presented to the Senate on Thursday, July 18, and passed the first reading.
The bill Local Government Independent Electoral Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024 is being sponsored by Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger East).
