England suffered a heartbreaking loss in Berlin after Spain scored in the final minutes to win Euro 2024. This is the second Euros final England has lost in a row, following their defeat to Italy in the final of Euro 2020.
Captain Harry Kane described the loss as a “huge disappointment” and a “tough tournament” that required resilience. However, the England team got back into the match with Cole Palmer’s long-range equalizer and a big moment when Spain cleared off the line.
Spain made the breakthrough in the second half with Lamine Yamal passing the ball to Nico Williams, who placed the ball low and firm in the England net. Dani Olmo had a chance for Spain but was slightly off-balance.
Substitute Cole Palmer scored a long-range shot in the 73rd minute, leveling things up with 17 minutes left. Mikel Oyarzabal broke England’s hearts with a goal in the 86th minute, thanks to a perfectly-timed cross from Marc Cucurella.
The manager, Gareth Southgate, admitted that his team competed until the very end of the final but he praised Spain as the “best team of the tournament” and expressed pride in the team’s performance.
Prince William, who was in the stadium, said that the match was not meant to be and expressed pride in England’s performance. King Charles urged his team to “hold their heads high” and celebrate their achievement.
