US President Joe Biden spoke for the first time since the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday in Pennsylvania.
Biden addressed Americans in a speech from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Sunday morning. He condemned the violent attack at a Trump rally and said there was a need for all Americans to stand together in condemnation of political violence and for national unity.
Seeking to present a united front, Mr Biden said in the televised speech that “everybody must condemn” the violent scenes in Butler, Pennsylvania. “We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this,” he added.
Biden said all federal agencies have thoroughly briefed him and praised the efforts of the Secret Service and other state agencies. But when asked about the nature of the incident, he refrained from making further comment.
The White House later said Mr Biden has spoken to his Republican election rival by telephone after he had left the hospital. Biden campaign managers said they were pulling television adverts as quickly as possible in the wake of the attempt on Trump’s life.
Other Democrats Condemn Too
Biden’s vice Kamala Harris called the attack on Trump a “senseless shooting,” and senior Democrats like former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have joined in condemning the attack on Trump.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who helped impeach Trump twice, said rather turgidly, “As one whose family has been the victim of political violence, I know first-hand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. I thank God that former President Trump is safe,“
Trump has reportedly left the hospital and is expected at another rally in a few hours in the state of Wisconsin.
