Kenyan President William Ruto has dissolved his cabinet following weeks of anti-government protests. Only the Deputy President and Prime Cabinet Secretary were spared.
The protests led by youths led to the burning of parts of the Kenyan parliament and other government facilities. At least 35 people died across the country. Mr. Ruto is under pressure from his citizens, who are worried about rising food prices. They say they are angry at the corruption and profligate lifestyle of several government officials.
Mr.Ruto promised to engage in extensive consultations across various sectors and political formations to establish a broad government base to accelerate reforms, including dealing with the debt crisis, raising domestic resources, expanding job opportunities, eliminating wastage, and ending corruption.
In his latest speech calling for calme, he reassured the country that his new government would be lean, inexpensive, effective, and efficient. However protests continue although not as intense as in the first month of the protest.
Several of the protesters are chanting and displaying signs of “RUTO MUST GO”.
