A former minister of agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for corruption and a lavish lifestyle on a private jet with his wife, ostensibly on government resources. Mr. Limpo will also refund the government $2.72 million used for personal expenses.
After the judgment, Mr. Limpo said that although he disputes the correctness of the verdict, he nonetheless accepts it.
However, the former agriculture minister is not the only cabinet member of President Joko Widodo’s government to face corruption charges. Earlier this year, a former communications minister was sentenced to a 15-year jail sentence, and in 2021, a similar conviction was handed over to a former social affairs and fisheries minister.
Mr. Limpo is the 6th high government official charged with corruption in Indonesia in recent years.
