As a result, Columbia was down to 10 men, and they held on to seal a momentous victory in their history, with James Rodriguez earning him the Player of the Match performance.
Coming into the match, James Rodriguez had the most goal involvement and still notched an assist for Jefferson Lerma‘s header. The Crystal Palace man leaped high following Rodriguez’s corner to give Columbia the lead.
Uruguay had no answer for the early goal despite having a numerical advantage, as Columbia resorted to a five-man backline that held firm till the contest’s final minutes.
The game concluded with a final burst of drama. Uruguayan players, including Darwin Nunez of Liverpool, entered the fan stands. This led to a melodrama involving security, fans from both countries and players, creating a commotion of epic proportions.
