The Kano State governor, Mr Abba Yusuf, has given the Kano State Hisbah Corps full authority against those engaging in or promoting homosexual lifestyle in the state.
The Governor’s directive was made known by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr Baba Dantiye, during an interview aired in Kano.
He said the government is opposed to groups in the state, such as the WISE—Women Initiative for Supporting Equality, reportedly promoting LGBTQ+ activities in the state.
WISE is an NGO that advocates for LGBTQ+ rights – a successor organization to Women Action for Gender Equality.
Such organizations may have now been emboldened by reports that Nigeria has assented to the Samoa Trade Agreement, which has binding provisions that protect the practice of LGBTQ in Nigeria.
But Mr. Dantiye says such agreement will not be applicable to the state. “I spoke with the governor, and he expressed his disapproval of the said agreement, though it has not yet been confirmed. He assured me that there is no room for LGBT activities in Kano,” the commissioner said.
LGBTQ+ is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and + (for other forms of sexual perversions). The government warns that such lifestyles were inconsistent with the tenets of the State’s Shari’a Law and the collective moral standards of Kano people.
The commissioner said it was necessary to make it abundantly clear that Kano State is a 98% Muslim-majority state and a citadel of Islamic moral consciousness and ethics.
He said besides the moral customs of the people, same-sex unions were abhorrent by nature itself. To combat it, the Governor, he said, has ordered the Hisbah Corps to crack down on any such practice in the state.

Hisbah Corp – is a religious police force created in 2001 and responsible for the enforcement of Shari’a Laws to only Muslims in Kano. The Law was also enacted in at least other eleven states of the Nigerian federation.
The Commissioner also stated that the government was in talks with religious leaders to help in a counter advocacy.
