Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has established a new Federal Ministry of Livestock Development. No minister has been named to lead the new ministry yet.

Today, Tuesday, July 9, the President announced at the State House, the formation of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee and the establishment of the ministry. Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila were among the cabinet officials present at the inauguration.

It should be remembered that on September 15, 2023, President Tinubu approved the formation of the Presidential Committee, which is tasked with reforming the livestock sector and offering long-term solutions to the nation’s ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders.

The committee was established after a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria was submitted.

But some may see it as a deft move by the President to pacify a section of the country dominant in cattle herding that made the establishment of the ministry a key demand.
