Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party‘s 2023 presidential contender, has called on the political leaders of the South East, especially the governors, to work together “as a family.”
He said such cooperative work was essential to regain the region’s peace and economic prosperity.
Mr. Obi spoke to the press, which besieged him at his country home in Onitsha over the weekend.

He said that while he “thank the government for their effort, all leaders need to do more. I urge the various governments of the Southeast to come together as a family”.

“I want to see the South-East governors work closely together as one,” Obi said, describing his appeal as “urgent.”
He lamented that Nigeria was quickly becoming one of the “most insecure spaces on the surface of the earth,” and he reminded the leaders that the “primary work of government is the security of lives and property.”

The former Anambra governor said he was giving the same advice to other regions of the country.
Merger Of Political Parties
Pressed on by journalists about a possible merger of political parties to present a formidable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, Obi decried that “Politicians are too preoccupied with elections.”
“My focus for now”, he said “is how to reduce the price of food, pull people out of poverty. That should be our concern“.

However, he said, “If forming a mega party is to be able to provide these solutions, I’m all for it. If a mega party is about consumption, consumption – no. If it is about production, production – Yes”.
IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu
Asked to comment about Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, he said “quite frankly”, he could see “no reason for his continued detention especially as the courts have granted him bail. Governments must obey the law”.
