Rangers International Football Club of Enugu, known as the Flying Antelopes, have been crowned Nigerian Premier Football League, NPFL champions for the 2023/2024 season.
Their triumph was sealed with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Gombe United at the Zaria Road Stadium in Jos on Sunday. It was Ranger’s last game, although it was merely a formality whichever it went. Rangers had topped the league table after they beat Bendel Insurance in Enugu on the June 17
But Sunday’s final match victory was a creamy topping to the delightful pie of the year NPFL campaign.
Led by captain Amobi Ezeakwu, the team amassed an impressive 70 points from 38 matches throughout the season. Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Musa Gusau presented the trophy as the warm, brotherly crowd of Jos roared in ecstasy.
They also got the NPFL cash prize of N150 million (one hundred and fifty million naira).
The match was witnessed by esteemed dignitaries, including the governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, and his visiting Enugu State counterpart, Peter Mbah. Others were top officials from the Nigeria Football Federation and the league board, chaired by Gbenga Elegbeleye.
Rangers, alongside runners-up Remo Stars have now earned the right to represent Nigeria in the African Champions League competition starting later this year.
This triumph marks a historic moment for Rangers International, showing them as a powerhouse in Nigerian football.
Coach Ezeakwu promised he would bring the African Cup to Nigeria like he did the Nigerian League Cup to Enugu.
