Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo recently shared his views on several issues in the latest episode of the ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast.
Kanayo made a number of revealing, if not controversial statements from monogamy to religion, sex in the industry, and homosexuality.
On Polygamy
The artist said he doesn’t believe in monogamy and praised polygamy as an integral part of African culture.
“I don’t believe in one wife. It is not our culture. It is not our tradition. It is not who we are. These are imported things,” he stated. “I never knew anything about divorce until we came to Lagos. The Igbo man prefers to die in marriage than divorce.”
Despite his views, which could be seen to oppose mainstream Christian beliefs, Kanayo is known to be married to one woman, Nneka Onyekwere.
Sex In Nollywood
On sex in Nollywood, the actor told his host, “Let me shock you. Many girls are desperate to act. Acting is not something you learn. If acting is not in you, go and sell crayfish.” He described how ladies, out of desperation, offer themselves to movie directors for roles.
He said however he was saddened to also observe that parents themselves drive their daughters sometimes into prostitution. “Many parents are sending their daughters into prostitution. When a father is asking a girl for N50,000, where does he expect her to get it?”
Church Doctrine
Kanayo did not spare some Christian sects that preach First Fruit principles to their congregants.“Religion has brought a lot of brainwashing to our people that a man will sit in the comfort of his home and ask my son or daughter to bring what the pastor calls First Fruit. For what? Now we all have anointing. The Bible says, “You are gods”. I’m a god. Your first salary is to your father, not your pastor”.
Igbo Presidency
He said what was keeping Nigeria from her esteemed greatness was that no Igbo had been president.
“The day you give an Igbo man the president of this country, that is the day Nigeria will discover why it is Nigeria economically. People within the country will say Hallelujah.”

Mr Kanayo was born Anayo Modestus Onyekwere on March 1, 1962. He began his acting career in 1982 and gained prominence with his role in the film “Living in Bondage” in 1992. He has starred in over 100 films and won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in 2006. Besides acting, Kanayo is also involved in politics and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2020. He holds degrees in Mass Communication, Law, Philosophy, and Political Science.
