US Military Begins Withdrawing From Niger Republic As Regions Turns To Russia

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) has announced the start of the US military’s departure from Niger Republic.

On June 7, 2024, the first C-17 Globemaster III aircraft departed from Air Base 101 in Niamey.

The withdrawal symbolizes a new phase in US strategic relationsip with the region, and reflects the shifting allegiances of Niger’s new military leadership, which has aligned with Russia following the ousting of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum last year.

For over a decade, Niger has been a central hub for US counterterrorism efforts and regional peacekeeping activities.

The United Staes force are leaving at a time of serious instability in the Sahel, where groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State affiliates still pose lethal threats. It has raised concerns about local forces’ ability to handle security challenges independently.

US officials say the withdrawal is being coordinated with Nigerien authorities. AFRICOM’s press release highlighted the “productive cooperation between the US and Nigerien forces” via the Joint Disengagement Commission.

The withdrawal of force is set to be completed by September 15, 2024.

However, this move raises questions about future US engagement in the region and its impact on both Niger and broader West African security.

Before the US, French forces were also compelled to withdraw from Niger by the new military leadership.

In Nigeria, public opinion have long been against the deployment of US and Western Forces in a continent still reeling from the vestiges of slavery and colonialism.
