President Bola Tinubu has named Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe the National Council on Climate Change‘s (NCCC) Acting Director General and Chief Executive Officer, pending confirmation by the NCCC Supervisory Council.
According to a statement made by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu’s appointment aligns with his commitment to furthering Nigeria’s green industrial agenda, boosting investor confidence, and generating sustainable economic value through climate finance instruments.
Dr. Maduekwe, 39, graduated from the University of Dundee with a bachelor’s degree in law, the University of Hull with a master’s degree in environmental law and policy, and the University of Dundee with a doctorate in law. The Intergovernmental Committee on the National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP) will include her as a co-chair. She has worked for more than 15 years.
In addition, President Tinubu appointed Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, 40, as the Senior Special Assistant on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement. Shelleng, who holds an MBA from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, will manage climate finance and stakeholder relations at the NCCC Secretariat. He will also serve as the Secretary of the Intergovernmental Committee on NCMAP and as a member of various presidential committees on climate action.
Olamide Fagbuji, 44, has been appointed as the Senior Special Assistant on Climate Technology and Operations. A policy analyst and computer scientist, Fagbuji will oversee the digitalization of procurement processes and procedural optimization at the NCCC Secretariat. He previously served as a Special Assistant to the President on economic matters and as the Technical Adviser to the NCCC Director-General on Policy Research and Strategy.
Expectation For High Performance
The appointments take immediate effect, and the statement says President Tinubu expects the appointees to contribute their expertise and discipline to Nigeria’s green industrial development and climate action goals.
“The President expects the new appointees to bring their expertise and discipline to bear in these very important assignments in pursuance of the nation’s aspiration on green industrial development and climate action for sustainable growth and national prosperity,” the statement added.
