The young police officer, Rouven L., who was stabbed during an attack at an anti-Islamic gathering in Mannheim, Germany has died from the wounds. He was 29-years-old.
The incident was reported by JolibaLive News! on Thursday May 30. when an irate knife-wielding assailant targeted attendees at an event organized by Pax Europa, a group opposed to the spread of Islam in Germany and Europe.
The attack left five persons injured, including the organizer of the event, an anti-Islam, far-right politician, Michael Stuerzenberger. He too was stabbed in the face and leg. He has been in hospital but is said to be in stable condition.
The police officer was “stabbed several times in the area of the head” while attempting to intervene, according to a local police statement. He underwent an emergency operation immediately after the crime and was put into an artificial coma, but succumbed to his serious injuries late in the afternoon on Sunday, June 2.
“We mourn a police officer who gave his life for our safety,” the police statement said.
German Leaders Mourn
Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences, saying he and Germany are “deeply saddened” by the officer’s death. In a tweet yesterday Scholz commended the officer’s dedication, saying, “His commitment to the safety of all of us deserves the highest recognition.“
“In these bitter hours, my thoughts are with his family and all those who mourn him.”
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said Germany must stand against intolerance and hate motives behind the attack. “Our security authorities have the Islamist scene firmly in their sights,” Faeser said, adding that Germany must defend itself against Islamist terrorism with determination.
Although he was reported to have died after he was shot by another officer, the knifeman, named as 25-year-old Sulaiman Ataee, is thought to still be alive.
One of his horrified neighbors described Ataee as becoming “radicalized” over the last few months.
Germany On Alert
Germany has been on high alert for potential Islamist attacks since the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated, with domestic intelligence showing that the threat level is higher than usual.
