Labour Strike Likely To Be Averted As National Assembly And Governors Wade In

The indefinite nationwide strike purposed by Nigerian labour unions to start tomorrow, Monday, June 3, 2024 may potentially be on hold as the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and the leadership of the National Assembly have waded into the dispute between the government and the unions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Tajudeen Abbas have reportedly invited the union leadership to an urgent meeting in a last minute effort to prevent the scheduled strike.

The meeting is expected to take place this night, according to reports.

On Friday, the Nigeria Labour Congress and its sister organization, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), made good their threat and declared an indefinite nationwide strike from Monday since they and the federal government could not reach an agreement on the minimum wage.

The Federal Government said it offered the unions N60,000 minimum wage per month, while the unions demanded N494,000. They cited hyperinflation as having rubbished workers’ income since 2019, when the wages were last reviewed.
