Fubara On Probing Wike’s Government: “I Have Nothing to Fear, All My Actions Were Authorized”

Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, has explained he has nothing to fear from any investigations or probe into any government he served in the past.

Fubara made this remark on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Egbeda Internal Roads. He had invited the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to do the commissioning.

Earlier in the month, Mr Fubara announced plans to set up a “judicial panel of inquiry to investigate the affairs of governance” under his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Fubara was Accountant-General of the state under Wike. In May 2022, he was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N435 billion fraud.

In Nigeria, governors and their deputies are constitutionally immune from prosecution while in office, leaving their aides like Fubara was at the time to take the heat of any alleged wrongdoing on their principal’s behalf.

Predecessor And Successor Fight For Control

Wike had fallen out with his successor Fubara over some undisclosed reasons. It is not clear if the judicial enquiry promised by the governor is merely a pressure tool to keep the minister and his acolytes at bay and allow him to run the state without interference.

Mr. Fubara asserted that he has detailed records of all his actions under previous administrations and he has nothing to fear, because they all had executive approvals.

I am not scared of anything. Anybody who calls me up any day, any time, I have my records to show. I have all the approvals to show that I acted based on approvals and not personal decisions. We are not going to rest until we make everyone happy in Rivers state.

What we bring to our people is service delivery at record time and cost-effectively. Everything we are doing is in my white paper. I carry it along. There is no issue of any manipulation. Call me any day, any time it is there. I know that, as a civil servant, what is most important is record-keeping,” he declared.
