The Nigerian Army has transferred Lydia Simon, a rescued Chibok girl, and her three children to the Borno State Government for reunification with her family.

Maj. Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, of the North East Joint Task Force, made this known during a handover ceremony at the Mailmalari Cantonment in Maiduguri on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

He revealed that the girl is six-months pregnant. She was rescued with her three children by troops from the 82 Division Task Force Battalion in Ngoza LGA on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Simon is one of 18 girls rescued during the operation.

In 2014, Boko Haram terrorists invaded an all-female school in Chibok, Borno State and abducted about 300 students and took them away, sparking national and international outrage and a world-wide campaign – #BringBackOurGirls. Shuaibu used the occasion to disclose the unrelenting domestic and international efforts aimed at the rescue and safe return of the girls to their families.

One of such national efforts is the conduct of military operations deep within the terrorist enclaves, which have yielded positive results to facilitate the rescue of some of the Chibok girls,” Shuaibu stated, pointing to the rescue of Esther Marcus and others.

He promised continuous efforts of the military in rescuing those still in captivity. He thanked the Chief of Army Staff for providing the necessary resources and support to his team to achieve their mandate.

Brig. Gen. Abubakar Haruna, Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 7 Division, was at the event. He noted that the young Simon has been receiving medical attention and care since her rescue on April 17, 2024.
