Governor Godwin Obaseki have announced a new minimum wage of N70,000 per month for civil servants in Edo state.
The new wage would commence on May 1, 2024, and typically will lead to consequential adjustments of the entire wages structure for all state workers.
Mr. Obaseki made the announcement on Monday 29 April while commissioning a new edifice built by his government for the labor unions. The building is named after Adams Oshiomhole, a renowned labour union activist, former governor of the Edo, and now senator representing Edo North senatorial district.
Obaseki had in May 2022 raised the minimum wage from N25,000 to N40,000, exceeding the national figure of N30,000. It was his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, who, while the national average was N18,000 in 2016 increased that of Edo state to N25,000 towards the end of his term in office.
Following a similar pattern, Obaseki is offering the new minimum wage of N70,000 just months to the end of his government in November 2024.
But there are speculations President Bola Tinubu may announce a new national minimum wage on May 1. If this happens, the jubilations in Edo may be shortlived.
The federal government and the labour unions have been locked in negotiation for a new national minimum wage. The unions are demanding N615,000 as the new wage in the face of rising inflation and currency devaluations.
