The 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results for entry into Nigerian universities have been released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
1.94 million candidates registered for the examination, which was conducted in 118 towns and over 700 centers nationwide.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, announced the release of the UTME results during a press conference at the board’s headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, on Monday.
The exams commenced on Friday, April 19th and concluded today on Monday, April 29th, 2024.
All the exams were computer-based tests (CBT), enabling results to be near instantaneous, but JAMB had previously warned it may delay the release of the results by a few days to thoroughly scrutinize them.
The board says it is essential it can guarantee the credibility and integrity of the systems and the results it produced. There were several allegations bordering on impersonations, mixed biometrics, and other forms of malpractice in some centers in some states.
Breakdown of the Results
Of the 1,989,668 candidates who registered for the examination, 80,810 did not show up on exam day, leaving 1,842,464 results available. But of those 64,624 results are still under investigation for a variety of reasons.
The gender disparity favoured the girls with over a million candidates. A significant enrolment by Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) rose 36.2% from last year.
Of the results released, 8,401 candidates or 0,4% of them scored above 300 marks. 77,070 scored 250 or above, 439,974 scored 200 or above and the vast remainder 1,402,490 candidates scored below 200.
List of Best Performing Candidates Withheld
The board disappointed many Nigerians eager to see the list of best performing candidates. It said it will withhold the list for now but gave no reasons.
In the 2023 JAMB result, the award for best performing candidate had sparked controversy. It was won by Nkechinyere Umeh who scored 360 but was disputed by one Ejikeme Mmesoma who claimed she got 363.
Both are from Anambra State.
It was later resolved in favour of Ms Umeh.
