The Transmission Company of Nigeria  (TCN) has fixed the national electricity grid, which collapsed early Monday. TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs Ndidi Mbah confirmed the restoration.

At 2 am, the grid fell from 2,583.77 MW to a mere 64.7 MW – marking a near total national blackout. It was the sixth collapse in 2024. The cause of the latest collapse, according to TCN, was a fire at Afam Power Station.

Mbah explained that the fire hit the Afam V 330kV busbar coupler, affecting Afam III and Afam VI units, causing a loss of 25 MW and 305 MW respectively. This sudden destabilization led to the partial collapse.

Despite this, Ibom Power Plant supplied parts of Port Harcourt, easing the impact. The grid’s affected part is now fully restored.

TCN reaffirms its commitment to enhancing the resilience and reliability of the national grid and pledges to continue investing in measures aimed at strengthening the grid infrastructure”, the statement reassured.

Nigeria’s government is still burdened with a subsidy bill of $2.6 billion or N3.3 trillion, undercutting her ability to invest more in power infrastructure. It recently raised electric tariff on so called Band A category of consumers to help it ease its subsidy burden.

Only N450 billion was budgeted for subsidy this year in the national budget. Even with the epileptic power supply, Nigerians across other Bands may gear up to tariff increases soon.
