A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced Mr Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky to six months in jail. The sentence has no option of fine.
The sentencing was kept until today after Bobrisky was convicted by Justice Abimbola Awogboro on Friday, April 5, 2024.
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) arrested and prosecuted him for the offense of abusing and mutilating Naira currency notes.
He pleaded guilty to the four-count charge of tampering with N490,000 by spraying.
Justice Awogboro, in delivering the sentence, said he hoped the judgement will serve as a deterrence to others. The verdict sent shockwaves across the country, where cash spraying has become a cultural norm.
The Judge however ruled the jail term for Bobrisky starts from March 24 – the day of his arrest.
As the sentencing commenced, the judge sought to properly identify the defendant and asked him what his gender is. “I am a man,” Bobrisky answered in court, resolving any further ambiguities surrounding his gender.
Bobrisky, known for flamboyant effeminate lifestyle has gained notoriety in Nigeria. Since the news of his ordeal broke however, few people have shed tears for him.
However, his being singled out and punished for cash spraying, could portray him as a target of persecution. It may also raise questions about fairness and selective law enforcement in this country.
