Geometric Power Limited, the Prof Barth Nnaji independent power generating plant located at Osisioma, Aba, in Abia State has announced the successful synchronization of its turbines with the national grid.
The alignment process, conducted from April 3 to April 7, 2024, ensures that the power generated by the plant from the turbines can be successfully transmitted into the national electricity grid.
In simple terms, synchronization is the crucial step of evacuating power into the national grid from the plant. Without this alignment (synchronization), electric power output from the turbines into the grid may be impossible or not maximized.
When a power generator connects to the grid, synchronization ensures that the power output and grid input operate at the right frequency. This process is also known as “paralleling the generator with the grid“. The grid is also called the Bulk Electricity System (BES).
During operation, the turbine speed dictates the generator frequency, while the generator excitation system manages the terminal voltage. All of this must align with the receiving side of the national grid.
Geometric announced on April 3, 2024, the synchronization could cause service disruptions in the Aba area and expressed regret for any inconvenience. It swiftly restored power supply soon after.
The $800 million, 181-megawatt Geometric Power plant was officially launched on Monday, February 26. With its transmission and distribution arms all owned and operated by the same parent company working together, it is hailed as the model that may deliver the first 24/7 reliable power supply in Nigeria.
The Geometric Ltd’s priority is to supply power to at least nine out of the seventeen Local Government Areas of Abia State: Aba North, Aba South, Osisioma, Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Isialangwa North, and Isialangwa South, and then transmit any excess unused power into the national grid.
However, the company has complained that gas supply from NNPC at Owarza, just 27km away, was hindering its effective power operations so far.
