Deputy Commissioner Of Police Takes Own Life In Ogbomoso, Oyo State

A Deputy Commissioner of Police assigned to the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (FCIID), Gbolahan Olugbemi, has reportedly committed suicide in his house in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

According to reports, the body of the DCP, who previously served as an aide to former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala during his short 7-month as governor of Oyo State between 2006 to 2007, was found lifeless with a noose around his neck.

Although an investigation has yet to determine the exact circumstances of his death, sources say the scene would suggest a case of suicide.

Olugbemi, aged about 50, returned home for the Easter holidays and was alone at his residence on Petros Academy Street, Federal Low-Cost area, Ogbomoso.

The residence is now cordoned off with sympathizers milling around discussing the tragic end of the high officer.

Neighbours expressed shock and sorrow at the tragic situation. One of them recounted, “Sometimes, he came home with police security. L saw him recently driving personally into his beautiful mansion.

It’s only him we see around. His family is not usually seen with him.”

Another neighbour suggested the DCPs have been battling depression for some time.

Notwithstanding his struggles, Olugbemi has been recognized as an effective police officer, particularly the role he played during the ENDSARS crisis in 2020, earning him a commendation.

Before his demise, Olugbemi held some important positions in the Nigerian police including serving as a DPO in the Ilupeju Area Command in Ajah, and Personal Assistant to two former Commissioners of Police in Lagos State.

When contacted for confirmation, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo Command, Adewale Osifeso, said he was too busy to say anything at the time.
