Gunmen have reportedly stormed a hostel in the University of Calabar (UNICAL) in Cross River State, South-South Nigeria over the weekend and abducted three students away.
The incident occurred at Freedom Hostel, which belonged to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at about 7.00pm on Good Friday, March 29.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Florence Banku Obi, gave the names of the abductees as Ugwu Chukwuemeka, a third-year student in the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology; Ojang Precious Ebejin, a second-year student in the Department of Medicine and Surgery; and Damilola Dickson, a final-year student in the same department.
The police has also confirmed the incident.
SP Irene Ugbo, the spokesperson for the Cross River Police Command said the police and other security agencies are working to unravel the situation and secure the safe return of the students.
Kidnap for ransom has become a menace in Nigeria in the last decade, more so in the northern region of Nigeria but it appears to be creeping in with increasing intensity to the south. President Bola Tinubu said his government will henceforth considers kidnappers as terrorists.
It is unclear the mission for this brazen abduction, nor has the abductors made contact with the school authorities or the parents of the victims as at the time of this report.
