Third Mainland Bridge Repair Almost Complete; Being Fitted With Solar Lights And CCTV, Says Umahi

The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos is being fitted with solar-powered street lights, and undergoing enhanced security by installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) along the 12 km bridge as repair work on the bridge nears completion.

This was revealed by Works Minister, David Nweze Umahi, speaking on a TV program on Sunday.

The bridge has been undergoing repairs for underwater structural damage for weeks causing gridlock to motorists and other road users. The repair work is costing the federal government N21 billion.

Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State, said in addition to the structural repairs, the solar lighting and CCTV systems were being implemented to ensure safety and deter criminal activities such as illegal mining near the bridge.

Mr President has released the money and I can say that 99% of the project is done. But what is to be done is additional work: we are putting up solar lights; we are replacing the generator lights with solar lights.

We are putting up CCTV both on top of the bridge and under the bridge because the president told me that part of the problem we are having is people who are illegally mining the sand. And I agree with him. I have seen it. They even go as far as destroying the concrete to anchor their small boats”, he said.

Third Mainland Bridge is the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland. The others are the Eko and Carter bridges.

The bridge is expected to reopen soon for public use on 4th April.

Lagos is the adopted home state of President Bola Tinubu, who governed the state from 1999-2007.

The several federal government investments in the state underline the special status of Lagos as Nigeria’s official commercial capital. It was the capital from the founding of Nigeria in 1914 to 1991 when it was moved to the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja.
