Quandong Geng, a Chinese national, has been found guilty of the murder of his girlfriend, Ummulkusum Sani Buhari, informally called “Ummita” by her friends.

Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji of the Kano State High Court, northwestern Nigeria gave his judgement on Tuesday, satisfied with the case of the prosecution.

The murder occurred on 16 September 2022 when Geng fatally stabbed 23-year-old Ummita, a National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) member, just fresh from the University of Sokoto, during a heated argument at her residence in Janbulo quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano.

Following the crime, Geng attempted to flee but was later arrested by law enforcement agents and brought to trial.

During the trial, Geng recounted his agreement with Ummita to get married, and the several investments he made in her young lover in the hopes of a future together.

Geng said they started preparation for their wedding and he spent N1.5 million on her wedding and “Asoebi” dresses for her and her friends. Even got N700,000 in new Naira notes for spraying on the wedding day.

“I went to Sokoto to see her family members and I spent N700,000.

On the 13th of September 2022”, he recounted, “she (Ummita) requested some money to be used in the house she is building in Abuja but I didn’t give her because I didn’t have money then.

Since then, she stopped answering my calls because she thought I am broke.”

Nonetheless, Ummita kept asking for money from him which he obliged.

Besides huge amounts of money I used to spend on her, I used to take her out to places like Bristol Palace and Central Hotel to eat food.

I bought her house worth N4 million, a car worth N10 million. N18 million as capital to start business, and spent N500,000 worth of bags and shoes on her new shop and N1 million worth of laces and wrappers and a house in Abuja which she started building.

Geng said he bought gold jewellery worth N5 million for Ummita, N6 million to process her certificate at Sokoto University and N1 million to install the solar system in her house.

Enraged at discovering her planned marriage to another man, Geng had busted into Ummita’s house on the fated day, according to Ummita’s mother. After repeatedly banging at the door, Ummita finally yielded and opened the door. He rushed in at her and later as argument ensued at Ummita’s room, stabbed her several times

Despite Geng’s narration of betrayal and financial generosity towards Ummita, the judge did not think it gave him the right to take another life and found him guilty of culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State.

Ummita’s mother, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, speaking to journalists after the court session said she felt pleased with the judgement.

Quandong Geng may appeal the judgement.
