EduRank, a leading source for social media analytics in the education sector, has unveiled the top 10 universities in Africa for 2024. Remarkably, no Nigerian university made it into this hallowed list.
EduRank’s rigorous evaluation criteria include research outputs, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence.
Based on an analysis of 24.5 million citations from 2.16 million academic publications across 1,104 African universities, EduRank’s comprehensive methodology highlights the prominence of certain schools over others across the continent.
EduRank’s analysis shows comparative rankings in different fields.
Among the top-ranking universities for 2024, seven are from South Africa, with one each from Egypt, Uganda, and Kenya. The University of Cape Town leads the pack, followed by the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Stellenbosch, all South African.
Incidentally, even the University of Cape Town which is #1 in Africa, is #242 in the global ranking.
Below is the list of the top 10 universities in Africa for 2024:
1. University of Cape Town (UCT):
Established in 1829, UCT has a rich history dating back to its origins as the South African College.
2. University of the Witwatersrand:
Located in Johannesburg, this institution has deep roots in mining, political activism, and the city’s development.
3. University of Stellenbosch:
As one of the oldest universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, Stellenbosch University holds a prestigious position in South Africa’s academic landscape.
4. University of Pretoria:
Renowned for its impactful research endeavors, UP stands as one of Africa’s largest contact universities.
5. Cairo University:
Esteemed for its excellence in medical education and research, Cairo University ranks among Egypt’s finest.
6. University of KwaZulu-Natal:
With a wide array of academic programs, UKZN is recognized as one of South Africa’s most productive research universities.
7. Makerere University:
Established in 1922, Makerere University is a cornerstone of higher education in East and Central Africa.
8. University of Nairobi:
This collegiate research institution in Kenya traces its roots to 1956 and has since become a prominent hub for academic excellence.
9. University of Johannesburg:
Known for its comprehensive offerings and diverse student body, UJ stands as one of South Africa’s largest universities.
10. University of South Africa (Unisa):
Distinguished as the world’s dedicated long distance education university, Unisa emphasizes accessible learning opportunities.
The only Nigerian institution, coming in the 13th position is the University of Ibadan (UI).
