Telecom Operator, MTN, Apologize For Network Disruption; But Silent On How Long Before Full Operation Is Restored

Africa’s Telecommunications giant, MTN has apologized for service disruptions to its voice and data networks owing to the reported undersea fibre optics cable cuts.

This damage which occurred earlier in the week around Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire affected other telecom operators across West Africa leading to massive disruptions to other dependent services including banks, financial and payment operations across the region.

The West Africa Cable System (WACS), the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE), MainOne, and SAT3 cables are said to have been affected.

Disillusioned customers have taken to the social media space, such as X, to express frustrations amidst the difficulty in placing calls or sending texts.

But Bayobab Group (formerly MTN Global) in a statement it just put out said it acknowledged the fact that there was a widespread issue concerning its network and assured the company is actively working to restore connectivity.

To mitigate the impact on our customers in the affected countries, our operations are actively working to reroute traffic through alternative network paths and engaging with our consortium partners to expedite the repair process for the damaged cables. Leveraging our robust and resilient network infrastructure, we aim to minimise service interruptions and maintain connectivity”, the company said.

The service disruptions seem to have mostly affected MTN and Airtel – both foreign entities, but Nigeria’s indigenous Glo Network appear to have been unaffected.

Last week similar service failures were experienced with most of the major operators, attributed to the same fibre cable cuts.

The statement did not promise exactly how long it will take to restore normal services and so users across the West Africa bloc may have to brace up to significant digital communication loss for some time.
